The Koralm Tunnel is perhaps the most prominent engineering feature of the Koralm Railway, Austria's most southern line. Once complete, the Koralm Tunnel shall be Austria's longest railway tunnel, possessing a length of 32.9 km (20.4 mi) while running at depths of up to 1,250 m (4,100 ft) below ground. It forms one section of the 130 km (81 mi)-long Koralm Railway which will link Graz with Klagenfurt. The Koralm Tunnel is a railway tunnel that is under construction in Austria under the Koralpe mountain range. Cases of synthesizing these nanoporous materials using other solid wastes as silica and/or alumina sources were also examined. Lastly, the utilization of fly ash for the preparation of silica aerogels or adiabatic foams, which are being considered as a potential building insulation materials, was briefly examined. The synthesis of mesoporous silica materials with a high surface area and large pore volume derived from fly ash was next assessed for their use as a support and as a surface-functionalized host for capturing the global warming CO 2 and rare earth metal ions. These zeolites can be used as adsorbents and ion-exchangers for environmentally hazardous materials including those present in the fly ash itself. In this mini review, zeolite synthesis from fly ash was examined by considering the ash composition, pretreatment procedures, and hydrothermal synthesis conditions (substrate composition and synthesis temperature/time) to identify an optimal set of synthesis conditions. As such, a critical review of these methods and their limitations and superiority over each other becomes necessary. This is mainly due to the fact that ash zeolites can be synthesized by employing different synthesis methods (viz., hydrothermal, fusion, microwave assisted hydrothermal and molten salt method) and several factors (viz., concentration of alkali source, temperature, time of reaction, liquid/solid ratio and type of flyash), which can significantly affect their overall properties. ![]() Though, zeolites find several industrial applications of high commercial and environmental values, their synthesis, characterization and recommendations for the most appropriate application are challenging tasks. These zeolites are minerals of alumino silicate group and exhibit high affinity to accommodate and exchange one or a group of metallic cations and/or water molecules. Flyash, an industrial by-product, rich in silica and alumina contents, has been known to be a useful material for synthesizing zeolites.
